Sleep studies aren't fun. PAP therapy isn't easy. But they are means to an end: a good night's sleep. Millions of Americans are suffering from sleep disorders but don't or won't get tested. If your life has changed since you've started treating your sleep disorder, we want to hear about it! We will feature selected stories in upcoming blog posts to help others get a good night's sleep too.
How did you feel before?
Many people don't realize they have sleep apnea but are suffering from it's symptoms. How did you feel?
Symptoms of Sleep Apnea:
- Excessive sleepiness during the day.
- Decrease in attention, lack of concentration, lack of energy, irritability.
- Decrease in memory.
- Poor sleep at night.
- Snoring.
- Choking sounds or periods of not breathing at night.
- Waking up with a dry mouth, sore throat, or headache.
- Other health conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, cognitive damage/dementia, sexual dysfunction.
What finally convinced you to have the sleep study?
Was it your bed partner? A family member? Why did you finally take the plunge and spend the night in a sleep center or use a home sleep testing device? Was the experience different from what you expected?
Did you struggle with PAP therapy?
Many patients struggle with PAP therapy. Compliance (regular usage of PAP therapy at night) averages around 50% nationally. How were you successful? Do you have any advice for someone recently diagnosed with sleep apnea and about to start therapy? Are there any secrets?
What do you know now about PAP therapy that you wish someone had told you when you first started?
How do you feel now that you are treating your sleep apnea?
How has your life changed? Has it improved your relationships? Are you more productive or effective at work?
What else would you like to share with someone who is considering having a sleep study or starting PAP therapy?
As compelling as the health consequences of sleep apnea are, many people still struggle with making the decision to get tested and treated. Sharing your story may make the difference and help someone get a better night's sleep!
